Dear Friends:
Thanks to your support and hard work, the City Council voted last night to fund and support the Federal Breakwater Reconfiguration Study. Restoring our shore will be the most important thing to happen to Long Beach in a generation.
Our $4 million commitment will come from a variety of sources, including $2.5 million from the Tidelands Fund, and another $800,000 from in kind services from the City of Long Beach. The remaining funds will come from grants and other agency support.
I supported moving forward because I believe that bringing waves back to Long Beach will improve our water quality, stimulate tourism, and boost our local economy by making our beaches a new and exciting destination.
We now have a historic opportunity to remake our shoreline and our city. As we move forward, we will ensure that the study fully looks at protection of our coastal homes and the Port of Long Beach. When that study is complete we will know more about these issues, and we will not support anything that endangers coastal properties or other infrastructure.
Thanks again for your support, especially to the local Surfrider Foundation who have been fighting this fight longer than anybody.
Go Long Beach!
Robert Garcia
